Post Tom Collins Pizza
As wonderful as sipping Tom Collins at Vinopolis’s lush Bombay Sapphire Experience may be, eventually you need to stumble out and forage for some sustenance. Luckily, you don’t have to stumble too far. Just steps from Vinopolis (at the corner of Stony Street and Clink Street) is Amano, a tasty little restaurant and bar serving up sandwiches, pizzas and the like. I must confess, I was dubious on my recent visit, and was really only stopping in because it was close to Vinopolis (where I’d been covering the BSE launch) and it was open. Having walked by this eatery a gazillion times (usually en route to Borough Market via Tate Modern or visa versa) and simply assuming it was there just to skim a few quid off the hordes of tourists, it was simply off my radar. My loss.
Amano’s pizzas are good. Damn good. I’d go back simply for their handmade dough/wood oven pizzas. In fact, I’m gradually starting to change my opinion of pizza in this city. For the longest time (aside from a few standby faves), my thoughts on pizza in London could be summed up in one word: SUCKS! However, with recent and successful forays to Gourmet Pizza Company and continued confidence in bedrocks such as Santoré, I’m starting to think this town is kinda, sorta okay with respect to Italy’s greatest export. I doubt London will ever take the place of New York or Napoli but since moving here in 2001, it’s come a looong way from the cardboard crust dregs of Ask and Pizza Express. Grazie!
Oh yeah, Amano does halfway decent nachos too! Olé!
Cheers,
