Ghost Bike of St John Street

Ghost Bike of St John St

Ghost bikes are (according to ghostbikes.org) “small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street.” These memorials are actual bicycles that have been painted completely white and locked to a street sign near the site of a crash. In addition to commemorating the loss of cyclists, ghost bikes serve as “quiet statements in support of cyclists’ rights to safe travel” and remind drivers to be more attentive on the roads.

One such stark white statement is on St John St at its junction with Clerkenwell Road, where it has been for a few months now at least. Islington Now reports the bike’s location is a site “where a number of serious collisions have taken place.” As solemn and as conspicuous as this memorial is, something about the thoughtful work of street art strikes a peaceful tone, offering those who pass by an opportunity to reflect upon the transient nature of life.
