Anna Nightingale Exhibition @ Doyle Devere Gallery until June 6

Do you want to celebrate female sexuality? I do. Why not! Meet Anna Nightingale: a Central St. Martin’s College graduate, who has been exhibited at the Ivy most recently dividing her time between London and Gozo. Her works are very beautiful depictions created in gold, silver and other precious metals, combined with vibrant colours, the subject matter is set to shock, indulge, invoke emotion and pleasure.

Since its inception six months ago, the Doyle Devere gallery has already created a stir in West London and beyond, for its bold presentations of contemporary art and photography.

The exhibition Come As I Am is a daring collection of stunning works by British born, Malta based artist Anna Nightingale whose bold representations of female sexuality and expressions of sexual energy can’t fail to arouse interest from both men and women. The works, created in precious metals, combined with bold splashes of colour, capture the onlookers attention in their own right, but on further inspection each ‘orgasm’ erupting across the canvas, is an emotional expression inspired by the artist’s current relationship to her renowned record-producer partner.

They are an expression of self and each of the varying layers that make up my life.

This series, based on separate narratives, demonstrates and explores themes of completeness, balance in life, being true to ones self and finding happiness. That’s my dose of Saturday afternoon philosophy delivered, job done.

Entertainment: SATC 2 fever hits London

SATC2

Squeal!

Sex and the City 2 movie has finally hit our shores and the past week has seen a positive overdose of themed consumerism. What makes these characters so desirable to women, their lives so inspirational? As a woman ‘of an age’ who has watched the TV show for years, do I now know them so well I actually feel like they’re my friends?

On Monday I went to see a cocktails and SATC event in Anise bar at Cinnamon Kitchen. Amidst the champagne cocktails and Benefit  mini-treatments, city ladies were salivating over burlesque-inspired lingerie from Olinka and massages from Cucumba.

All self-respecting London hotels have packages somewhat aimed at the young and fancy-free market; the St James’ hotel, Guoman, The Dorchester ( although they’d never admit to it ) the Doyle collection and the Hyatt Regency Churchill to name a few. In the corporate world, everything from Lipton Tea, Diet Coke, Triumph bras, to Muller light yoghurts, Chambord, and the Toyota Yaris have hitched a wagon to this steam train.

Much as it pains me to admit, by Thursday I was whipped into such a frenzy, I couldn’t resist going to Leicester Square  for the Premiere and to try and get a glimpse of the girls responsible for the chaos.  In 10 years living here, I had never really bothered to find out when premieres were in town to see the stars. After some questionable ‘stars’ like Amanda Holden and Angela Griffiths, the next comet I saw was Kylie. Hooray, worth my time already - my smooth-faced childhood idol was about to give way to my adult idols. Kim Cattrall oozed out of a strapless floor-length black gown, while Kristen Davis shone is a sparkly gold halterneck. As Gok Wan minced the red carpet and commented on the fashions, Sarah Jessica Parker hefted a black Alexander McQueen puffball with a black tumbleweed head piece ( so that’s where that black cloud from LOST went! ), Chris Noth looked a little perma-tanned and Cynthia Nixon looked vastly different with questionable long locks and a teal gown. I justify my internal excitement by the fact that Vivienne Westwood was toddling around there too. Lastly, no sign of Aiden (sad face)

SJP on the press trail

So far reviews are mixed and it appears this second instalment is not as exciting now the girls, ahem, ladies are a little older and away from their gravity-defying lives in New York. Is it based more on feminism and the sustaining power of girlie friendships, or is the different location of Abu Dhabi because they are planning a world tour? – Sex and the City 7 might be based in London!

Opening today across the country, not even hideous consumerism could stop this from being a bank holiday weekend girl-fest. Most ladies I know will want to see how the ‘soulmates’ get on, out of sheer curiosity if for no other reason, so leave a comment if you’re in the sisterhood! ( Off to find my cheap Primani Manolo-knockoffs….. )

Blogger Interview: Jacqueline from Platform Princess

The latest in our series of interviews with London bloggers is Jacqueline, the brains behind Platform Princess. We discover her fashion tips, trend predictions and turning up to exams in pink heels.

Qype: Can you tell Qypers who you are and what you do?

I’m a 25 year old freelance stylist and fashion PR from London.

Qype: What prompted you to start your blog, and what elements do you think have contributed to it becoming so popular?

Thank you for calling my blog popular! I would say people read it/can relate to me because I don’t take myself too seriously. A general love of fashion is what prompted me to start. I was the sort of kid that dressed really inappropriately to school. I was lucky to have a mum who never put restrictions on what I wore. I never wore trainers or slack bottoms, turned up to exams in pink high heels and went out partying in bra tops. I love to talk, share ideas and meet new people, so blogging was the perfect outlet.

Qype: Who’s your fashion icon? And the worst?

I don’t really have a fashion icon. I would say I love really obscure dressers such as Roisin Murphy, who aren’t afraid to be uncool. I’m a Londoner, and we’re all about ‘easy dressing’ so I suppose there’s worse than people that look like they’ve tried to hard to follow a trend. Then again, I love the over done prissy look (think Olivia Palermo and Diane Kruger) as I like people who dress ‘nicely’. I suppose that’s a bit of a contradiction! I’m really not a fan of grunge trends too, like over-studding and ripped tights, so maybe someone like Kate Lanphear would be my worst.

Qype: What are your favourite places in London to visit when you need a new outfit?

Zara, H&M trend, Cos and Reiss. I recently discovered Topshop too. I know it’s like a national treasure here, but I’d never really been a fan. I actually spend most of my time shopping online. I love Net A Porter, Matches and eBay!

Qype: Where do the fashionistas of London hang out and where do you get the best snaps?

I would say East London; Broadway Market, Brick Lane, Hoxton, Shoreditch. Camden and Primrose Hill are also cool for street style.

Qype: Can you tell us your trend predictions for next season?

Native American and Navajo knits, slouchy silhouettes, placed embellishment and hardware and soft military.

Qype: Give us one place which you think every Londoner should have in their ‘Little black book of hidden gems’.

The Little Bay restaurant on Belsize Road. It’s my favourite kitsch place to eat. It’s family run and they have the sweetest raised taverns to sit in. For fashion, Jo’s stall at Portobello (Friday not Saturday) has the best vintage Victoriana dresses.
