Cinephilia movie night

Sometimes the multiplex with its diet of mindless blockbusters and too tall popcorn tubs just doesn’t cut it. Have you heard of Landing Lights, or New Madrid? No? Neither had the 13 indie-loving Qypers who met up for a movie night with a difference last week, at London’s hottest new independent screening venue – Cinephilia.

Greeted with tapas and Nicky’s special sangria in the cool upstairs cafe part of the venue, surrounded by Polish film posters, we then headed downstairs to the intimate screening room (which also discreetly houses a well-stocked film book and DVD section).

Yoram, the manager, is seriously passionate about indie film, and introduced four shorts he had chosen for us. And it was quite a mix: a computer generated animation, experimental documentary, Danish rite of passage and a more conventional piece.

Guru Event: Zumba in The City @ Fitness First

Benny Benassi-esque warm up for the main event

So I first had the idea for a cheeky zumba session at Fitness First when downloading some rather wacky and wonderful news feeds coming through my Facebook account. Next thing I’m leafing through the morning’s Metro to discover that zumba is the hottest ‘dance craze taking over the fitness world’. I’ll take a healthy chunk of that I thought, upon planning a suitably stripy gym ensemble to sweat and salsa in perfect harmony.

Raising the tempo several notches

Meet Heidi van Broek, the brains of the operation with four years teaching experience in group fitness, along with years of personal experience nutrition and holistic therapies to aid in her own goals. She also works as a registered fitness instructor and is currently freelancing in various locations around London. Her life mantra revolves around health and wellness, exemplified by her students at each class. So, what the sausage is zumba anyway? Well essentially a programme which fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a one of a kind fitness programme that will blow you away featuring interval training, fast and slow rhythms and resistance training all happily geared towards toning and sculpting your body while burning fat.

Just follow her cunning T-shirt instructions

The goal is a simple one, to work out, love working out and get totally hooked! For me, someone who occasionally needs to be rugby tackled to get into the gym, I certainly bought into this concept. Am not quite sure how many calories I burnt through, but considerably more than my usual Wednesday endeavours, well deserving of that post-energetic buzz vodka tonic (slim line, mind!)

Feel the Latin passion, shout if you feel so inclined

Heidi’s zumba classes have been such a stompin’ success, she now has a team of dancers catering for bespoke private events across the capital. In addition to creating www.MyFitnessBuddy.co.uk with Lola Adeoye (a one stop shop for your fitness questions and needs) she organises cycling and yoga/pilates retreats to the Canaries. Originally meant for instructors needing a holiday, it is essentially a retreat from fitness. The trip is suitable for all ages, simply bringing the indoor spinning experience outdoors where her clients can feel their own fitness advancement on the open road. Kinda Thelma and Louise style with less tragedy and plenty more energy, result!
