Dear Qype, where can I eat on New Year's Day?

Expecting your hangover from 2010 to continue well into New Year’s day? Or just looking to carry on your partying? Here are some of places that will feed and water you throughout January 1st. It’s all about hair of the dog, right?

Cafe Sol: This Mexican restaurant in Greenwich isn’t particularly fancy, but it is open and the food is tasty. The Greenwich Union on Royal Hill is open too.

Island Restaurant and Bar: These guys in West London are going to be serving an a la carte menu so head there if you’re on that side of town.

Royal China: Dimsum the only thing that’s going to cure that hangover? I feel you. Handy that every single one of the Royal China chain is open then, isn’t it?

The Merchant: This Battersea pub will be open if you’re hangover free and you want to go for a pint. You’re braver than me.

The Florence: But I have been meaning to go the Florence in Herne Hill, and I hear they’re open  from 12. They’re doing food from 1 too. Not that I’ll be awake by then, but still.

OXO: If you’re in central (not gone home yet? I’m impressed), then head to the OXO tower – their bar, restaurant and brasserie are all open.

Watching that James Bond film is just going to have to wait. At least another day whilst we party like it’s 2010.

Final chance for Christmas Carols around town

Over 50 choirs have taken part this year to present carols every night in Trafalgar Square. Against the backdrop of the giant fresh Norwegian spruce, donated every year since 1947 by the people of Oslo, carols were sung every night until Wednesday 22nd December between 5.00 – 9.00pm. If you’ve missed it? At 2.30pm and 6.30pm on Christmas Eve, the choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields perform in the refurbished church (and there’s even mulled wine available in the Cafe in the Crypt!)

Fancy a look pre-royal wedding?  Westminster Abbey will have two carol services; 6.00pm on Thursday 23rd and Christmas Eve at 4.00pm but free tickets must be shown for entry.

Southwark Cathedral has a carols and building the crib service (yes, that’s a new one to me too) specifically aimed at children at 4.00pm on Christmas Eve.

In the original heart of London at 4pm on both Thursday 23rd and on Christmas Eve, St Pauls Cathedral hosts a moving carols ceremony of traditional songs by the Cathedral choir. Again on Christmas Day at 3.15pm is the chance to celebrate popular carols and seasonal songs (i.e. the more child-friendly option!)

If you’re after less of a church-going experience but still want to feel festive, try some of these options:

The Royal Albert Hall is hosting its final Carols by Candlelight services on 24th December at 2.30pm and 7.00pm. Talk about an all-rounder of Christmas cheer – the concerts feature readings from Dickens and The Bible and classic orchestral numbers from Handel, Vivaldi and Mozart in addition to well-known carols like Good King Wenceslas and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Check here for last-minute tickets.

Just behind Oxford Street at Wigmore Hall, Terry Waite narrates a charity concert of Swedish and British festive songs and carols. Taking place on 23rd at 7.00pm, Swedish mulled wine and gingerbread will be served during the interval. Prices range from £12 – £28 for top-price seats.

Prefer more pomp and jazz?

Tickets for the O2 Christmas Spectacular on Thursday 23rd at 6.30pm are still on sale. Hosted by Myleene Klass, Rhydian and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra amongst others will perform classics, carols and number 1s in a packed program for all the family.

The Barbican have the Carols and Christmas show on 23rd at 7.30pm with seats still available in all price ranges.

Where will you be watching carols this season?

New Year's Eve: London Club Nights

Still wondering how to spend the biggest party night of the year? Pretty much every London venue with a license will be throwing a bash, so there’s no excuse for staying inside with Jools Holland and the last of the mince pies. Whether you opt for the type of debauched evening that leaves you cosseted in a slanket on New Year’s Day or a slightly classier affair, it would be a shame to miss out. Especially as we’ve gone and cherry-picked the best of London’s (frankly, overwhelming) events. Go, if only for the novelty of catching the tube with bedraggled revellers at 3am.

Dinner and bowling may seem a little tame, but the delightfully retro New Year’s Eve @ All Star Lanes is astonishingly good value – pay £30 for a glass of bubbly, two-course meal, game of bowling and a cocktail. If your NYE isn’t complete without dancing until your feet burn, a DJ will be on hand playing Rock’n'Roll, Disco and more.

If there’s one night of the year where a spot of fancy dress doesn’t go amiss, it’s New Year’s Eve. A Masked Ball too sophisticated? Sip a Pink Panther cocktail (free, if you’re in costume) at Jetlag’s Cartoon Fancy Dress night and celebrate “animation in all its glory”. Alternatively, dig out the seamed stockings and party like it’s 1939 at The Blitz Party (pictured) in The Arches. Dodge sandbags and be entertained “by the UK’s finest swing bands” with a gin cocktail in hand.

Feeling Gloomy and Club de Fromage – two well-known club nights in their own right – will be going head to head on New Year’s Eve at the O2 Academy Islington. Experience the last fifty years in Classic Rock and Pop on one floor or listen to gloomy Indie on another. With live air guitar sets, cake and a confetti cannon, this is one club night that’s seriously tongue-in-cheek.

If Grime and Dubstep float your proverbial boat, why would you be anywhere other than the Urban Nerds’ New Year’s Eve party on December 31st? As if the club night couldn’t get any cooler, this year they’re taking over Hearn Street Car Park in Shoreditch, with an after party at The Queen of Hoxton (home to East London’s favourite rooftop terrace).

But if you’re having trouble making up your mind, sod clubbing and watch the firework display at Southbank instead. Every Londoner should do it once.
