British Pie Week: London’s Best Pies
Not that we need any excuse to eat meat encased in pastry, but with British Pie Week (7th-13th March) in full-swing, it’d be rude not to. We’ve rounded up the London restaurants, pubs and shops that are home to our favourite pies:
The “big, silver portable pie outlet” that is Battersea Pie Station lives in Covent Garden and serves up everything from Steak & Guinness Pie to Chicken & Bacon, and if you catch them during Christmas, Reindeer (though veggies can enjoy the Butternut Squash & Goat’s Cheese). We’ve heard excellent things about their gravy but if you want to be really authentic go for the liquor – a parsley sauce rarely seen outside of East End pie and mash shops.
Not only was The Newman Arms George Orwell’s drinking den of choice, it has a whole restaurant dedicated to pie. The traditional and pint-sized Pie Room serves “a traditional atom-bomb cloud pie, or a pudding pie” on willow patterned plates with plenty of veg and mash. If you have room for it – unlikely, as “proportions are designed with a builder’s tummy in mind” - try the treacle sponge with custard for afters.
“A real deal, old school pie and mash establishment” with austere tiled walls and lovely serving ladies, Clarke’s Pie and Mash Shop is about as traditional as it gets. Head to the Exmouth Market shop for a large pie, two mash and plenty of liquor for the princely sum of £3.25. If you’re feelin’ adventurous, try the jellied eels.
With the accolade of ”ultimate Sunday afternoon hangover pub”, it makes perfect sense that The Camel serves up some of the best pies this side of Bethnal Green. For around £10 you can get a “a super size plate of food comprising of pie, mash, minty mushy peas and a gravy boat to boot”. Bonus: There’s more than one veggie option.
If you’re looking for a bargain then Clapham-based gastropub The Avalon won’t disappoint – for British Pie Week you can get a pie and a pint for £10. North of the river, The Well in Clerkenwell will be treating pie-lovers to a three-course menu for £20.
Psst! Don’t forget that you’ve got until Wednesday to win pie treats for two in our Pie Off competition. Good luck!
