Coquette at Kettner’s
Here at Qype we’re big fans of the gorgeous 40 Winks Hotel in Mile End (yes, Mile End). Run by interior designer David Carter, it’s one of London’s most special small hotels. So when we heard that the man himself would be hosting an afternoon of “naughty self indulgence, seductive style and decadent pampering”, how could we resist?
And Coquette certainly lived up to the precedent left by its predecessor, Tart at 40 Winks. Ladies (sorry, no Gents allowed) were encouraged to don their fanciest vintage frocks and head to Kettner’s in Soho for gin cocktails and general girliness.
But before we made our way through the cucumber sandwiches and dinky desserts (look out for the amazing raspberry meringue thingy), there were makeovers to be had! Pinny-clad stylists from Lipstick & Curls, armed with hairspray, rollers and tongs, speedily styled our hair into beehives, victory rolls and pin curls. Make-up artists from Benefit took care of our faces, sorting us all out with the perfect red lip.
Once everyone was tarted up, we could take part in a programme of activities “aiming to educate as well as entertain”; swing dancing, cocktail masterclasses and a kissing lesson (including a demonstration) were all on the itinerary. Accompanied with a Hendrick’s gin cocktail, of course.
And if all that activity proved a bit too much, we could take a break and try on a new dress courtesy of The Roaming Vintage Store. Or visit the fortune teller. Or try on gorgeous hats by Katherine Elizabeth….You get the picture. There are so many beautiful things to look at and fun things to do that the afternoon soon flies by.
Coquette is a wonderfully civilised way to spend an afternoon in the centre of town, and one of the best excuses we’ve heard for having gin and cake for lunch. Go, and come out more glamorous (and just a little bit tipsy).
The next Coquette will be on June 18th. Tickets are £90 each – for more info and to book contact David Carter at reservations@40winks.com or phone 0207 790 0259.
