The best streets in London… Royal Hill, Greenwich
Everyone has a favourite street in London. It’s probably not Oxford Street. Mine is Royal Hill in Greenwich, with the perfect little row of local shops, excellent cafes and darn good pubs. It’s even away from the centre of Greenwich which can be full of tourists on the weekend, making it my favourite place. Here are the top spots on the street, please try not to descend on them immediately.
Drings – Great meat, good value and friendly. If I lived this side of Greenwich, I’d buy my dinner from here every single day. I’d be fat and happy.
La Fleur -Not only is the coffee damn good here, but they’re a garden cafe which means that they have the cutest secret garden hidden away. It’s a bit like eating in a jungle, which is so much fun. There’s a cute tabby cat too. He’s friendly. You can see him sitting in the window when it’s too cold for playing outside.
The Fishmonger – This fishmonger is opposite my dream London house. I’m not the biggest eater of seafood, but I still find myself in here, which I knew what the heck to do with a lobster.
Greenwich Union - My absolute favourite pub in London. Great beer garden, damn fine ale (they’re the flagship pub for Meantime Ales) and excellent good too. Try their homemade fish fingers, be inspired to make your own after a trip to the fishmonger down the road. Instead, get too drunk in here and leave after last orders.
Richard I – Not as enjoyable (personally) as the Greenwich Union next door. It’s got a fine beer garden, though.
The Cheeseboard – This shop might be small, but it’s perfectly formed. An excellent range, and very friendly staff who know their brie from their cheddar. You can buy all your cheeseboard trimmings too.
Royal Teas – This cafe is a local treat, so we don’t share it with just anyone. It’s cute, unpretentious and friendly. Cheap too. There’s also a little book swapping corner. Don’t you go taking up all the seats.
Viewfinder Gallery – This tiny gallery is a big part of the art community in Greenwich. Always lots going on, and public exhibitions that are actually worth going to see. And, free wine at the regular private viewings.
Anything else I’ve missed? There’s also a Dance Agency (you can watch as well as do) and a greengrocers as well as lots of little beauty salons and hairdressers. Really nice view when you get to the top of the hill as well.
What’s your favourite street in London?
