Qype Competition: The Book Club’s Birthweek Bonanza

Didn’t that geezer say that if you’re tired of The Book Club then you’re tired of life? Well maybe he should have done. This little spot on Leonard Street in EC2 is celebrating only its second birthday and yet is already established as east London’s thriving hub of alternative activities, all the way from street parties, captivating club nights, astronomy to art and exhibitions. Oh, and ping pong too.

In honour of their second anniversary Birthweek Celebrations from 17th October, we have teamed up with our Book Club friends to offer ONE LUCKY WINNER this fantabulous prize: win a week’s guest list for two to all the Birthweek events (which includes some of their classics like Super/Collider Science Fair, Scratch + Sniff and the rather enticing sounding Come and get Felt Up), a £100 bar tab and a meal for four!

1. Email us on qdl@qype.com with ‘Book Club ‘Em Danno’ in the subject line/strong>

2. Retweet us saying “RT to win Birthweek guest list, £100 bar tab and dinner for four @thebookclubec2″

Closes 10th October at 11am. Winner needs to be contactable within 24 hours, otherwise it goes to the next name drawn. The prize is not transferable, exchangeable for cash or anything other than what’s stated above, and the bar tab and meal must be redeemed within the week beginning 17th October 2011; them’s the rules, so don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Qype does Harrow: Alternative Area Guide

Niharika here, the new Community Management Intern at Qype. I have been living in Harrow for over eight years now – it is a little town in North-West London. My guide to Harrow is a little glimpse into the area that I’ve grown to love. I had a chance to walk around with my camera ‘on assignment’ for this post, and got to revisit some of my favourite places to eat, shop, and wander.

Harrow School for Boys

Harrow School for Boys

The Harrow School for Boys is what Harrow is most well known for. It is situated on Harrow on the Hill, which is a wonderful and picturesque part of Harrow. Students from the school are known as ‘Harrovians,’ and if you spot any straw boaters around the hill – you’ve also spotted a Harrovian! Another Harrow landmark is the Town Memorial. It is located at the bottom of the hill next to the local park.

The Old Etonian

The part of Harrow that is on the hill is really pleasant and peaceful. There are a range of restaurants such as the Blues Bar and Restaurant, and Incanto. Next door to these is The Old Etonian Hotel which has a restaurant with ‘comfortable bentwood wicker chairs and white tablecloths…it faces south down West Hill, so the low-ceilinged room is light.’ The staff are ‘experienced and friendly and the menu is full of traditional French dishes and the food well cooked.’

The Doll's House on the Hill

The Doll's House on the Hill

My favourite place on the hill however has to be The Doll’s House. This is a lovely little cafe with a range of cakes, sandwiches and tea on offer. The interior is extremely cute and seating is really comfortable. There is also a little shop at the front of the cafe where you can purchase sweets. The Doll’s House also has a lovely outdoor seating area; it is a perfect location for catching up with friends.

After exploring Harrow on the hill, you can make your way into the town centre. The walk down the hill is lovely – there is a little scenic path under a canopy of trees.

St. Ann's Shopping Centre

St. Ann's Shopping Centre

To get your fix of shopping you can head over to St. Ann’s or St. George’s. Both have all the standard high street shops and the local Vue cinema is in St. George’s.  If you enjoy Chinese food, make sure you nab a table at Royal China – excellent for a dim sum Sunday lunch, quite expensive, but worth a visit. I love the egg-fried rice here, and their dim sum menu is impressive – the Prawn and Chive dim sum is my favourite. Another Chinese restaurant is Taste of China (next door to Royal China)- which also serves dim sum, and is as popular as its competitor.

Is there something that I have missed out in this guide to Harrow? If so, please add it here.

The Art of Scare: Halloween Qype-In at The London Dungeon

This Halloween we’re exchanging the horror of themed club nights and aggressive trick-or-treaters for another sort – a night at The London Dungeon! They’re opening late especially for 40 lucky Qypers and putting on an after-hours tour that brings the city’s darkest moments to life.

At London’s spookiest destination we’ll come face to face with the infamous Sweeney Todd, explore Jack the Ripper’s brutal crime scenes and (hopefully) survive the tale of Stingy Jack, the evil mythical character damned by the devil in Irish folklore.

Plus, we’ll try out their 5D ride, Vengeance, that’s a “full scale assault on the senses” and take a lesson in The Art of Scare. We can’t promise that you’ll make it home without looking over your shoulder…

But this being a Qype event, you’ll definitely be fed, watered and entertained (thanks to those lovely folks at Merlin Groups, who offer group savings to 29 Merlin attractions across the UK, including Alton Towers Resort, THORPE PARK and the Dungeons).

So if you’re free on 20th October from 6.30pm and have nerves of steel, put your name down for the event here.
