L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele
A recent trip to sunny and frenetic Naples allowed a return visit to one of the yummiest eateries I’ve ever come across – the legendary L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele.
Back in 1906, Michele Condurro opened his first pizzeria in Naples, Italy where for a quarter century the tradition of baking some of the most wonderful pizzas ever devoured by anybody began in earnest. Then in 1906, Michele had to move shop due to the construction of a hospital. Since then, L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele at Via Cesare Sersale 1 has been wowing locals and visitors alike with simple, quality pizzas. How simple? Well, here’s what le pizze da Michele are comprised of: “Type 00” wheat flour, San Marzano non-concentrate tomato sauce, cow-milk mozzarella from Agerola, seed oil, water, yeast, marine salt, basil, oregano and garlic. That’s it. And my taste buds assure you, that’s all you need!
Da Michele is one of those if-you-only-have-time-for-one-meal-make-it here sorts of places. It’s a bit of a tourist destination and queues are to be expected (especially at lunch on a Saturday). Still, the austerity of the space (think St John, Napoli-style), the easy menu (two pizzas, La Margherita and La Marinana), and an equally short list of drinks (beer, Coke, Fanta or mineral water), super cheap prices (get stuffed on a massive Margherita with doppia mozzarella for €5) all combine for the perfect Neapolitan dining experience.
The charred just right edges of the gummy crust bounding over the edges of the plate, the warm and sweetly sun kissed, soupy sauce mixed with the little clumps of gorgeous and fresh mozzarella – the pizzas served at this foodie shrine in the land of good pizza are strong contenders for my response to the ever hypothetical if-you-were-on-death-row-what-would-your-last-meal-be? contemplation.
Can’t make it to Naples? That truly is a shame. But somewhat comparable Neapolitan eats may be had in London. Santoré at Exmouth Market offers some of the best Neapolitan style pizza I’ve had this side of Vesuvius and Donna Margherita in Clapham is without a doubt the best Neapolitan restaurant I’ve visited outside Italy. Obviously, there are a lot more pizza and pasta joints in London. Santoré and Donna Margherita represent two of my faves. Anybody else got some recs?
